Don’t Play with Fire(works)

by Wyatt Shev on 07.02.09

Why it matters:

The fourth of July is just around the corner.  Everyone understands that fireworks can often cause injury, but did you know they damage the environment even if you don’t lose an eye in the process?

Recap:

Fireworks release a number of  harmful toxins into the atmosphere– metals such as aluminum and cadmium and substances with radioactive and carcinogenic elements.  These toxins eventually find their way into soil and water- and that has the potentially to severely alter the ecology.  But the environment is not the only thing at risk.  Scientists are  just beginning to understand how these airborne toxins may also affect the health of  human spectators and nearby wildlife.  Perchlorates- oxidizing chemicals used as explosive agents in most fireworks have been linked to hypothyroidism, and particulate matter from burnt charcoal and sulfur can get lodged in the lungs, possibly leading to lung cancer.

Commentary:

To many Americans, Independence Day means one thing, spectacular fireworks shows.  But, so many Americans are completely unaware of the hidden dangers inherent in these dazzling night-time displays.  With more and more research focusing on the potential health risks and environmental implications, perhaps we could be seeing a shift in our habits in the away from “traditions” like explosives…I mean, fireworks.  If you play with fireworks, it’s possible that you could lose a lot more than just an eye.

Creative Solutions:

Try low-impact camping  and enjoy the stars- an all-natural light show

Try Thai fire sky lanterns instead of fireworks

Some cheap, handy firework alternatives

Attend a laser light show instead

You say that many people are unaware of the dangers of chemical fallout from fireworks. I don’t see it that way. I think we as a society are hard wired to festivities and a party atmosphere. We seem to be ill informed by choice.
Right now, Vancouver is hosting the symphony of fire and as much as informative posts attempt to make people aware of the danger, forget it. You’re considered a party pooper Grinch! Modern man must be a pathetically superficial species. Parrrrrrdy! That’s all that matters, the environment be damned.

Sky lanterns instead of fireworks might work in some places…. but when they fall from the sky they can be a fire hazard and they also contribute to litter. There are better options to choose from. No fireworks!

I agree with the environmentalist who has written this article. But, as the others say, if there are advantages, there are also disadvantages. In fireworks, if we wish to have a colorful New Year we must use fireworks but as a result, it will cause diseases and pollution in the atmosphere.
