Why it matters:
Printing irresponsibly has a heavy footprint on the environment from energy use to forest depletion.
Recap:
In GreenBiz’s recently published ‘US Government Wastes Over $440 Million per Year in Printing‘ to the report released by Lexmark and O’Keeffe & Company, 2009 Government Printing Report, the federal government alone spends $1.3 billion dollars on printing every year, and almost one-third, $440 million, is waste. Due to the lack in green printing policies federal employees print a staggering 30 pages every work day and 92% said that they print more than they need. On the brighter side, a green printing law was enacted that should result in a reduction of paper in state offices by 30%.
Commentary:
Another way to conserve besides paper is on ink. Spranq has released a new typeface Ecofont, a simple solution that can save up to 20% less ink due to small circular holes that run throughout each character.

While it is best for typeface 12 and below and sans serif, it’s a great ecosolution. Now we can do more than just saving paper, the domino effect is taking hold, hopefully. We may be kicking ourselves for not having figured this out sooner, maybe now we will begin to look at everything in a different way, holes are a start.

Printing irresponsibly can have a significant footprint, but so does irresponsible digital communication. The fact is that predominant print and digital media practices are unsustainable, and promoting the use of so called “ecofonts” is distraction from the core supply chain transformations and habits of mind that are required.
